If you work with chemicals, cleaning agents, or industrial materials, you have probably heard of an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). Today, this document is more commonly referred to as an SDS (Safety Data Sheet). But what exactly is an SDS, and why is it so important for workplace safety?

The Shift from MSDS to SDS: The name was updated from MSDS to SDS as part of the Globally
Harmonised System (GHS) implemented by the United Nations. This change ensured that safety
documents worldwide follow the same 16-section format, making them universally readable and
reliable.

What is an SDS?

A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a standardised technical document that provides detailed information
about a hazardous chemical or product. It acts as a comprehensive guide for handling, storing, and
responding to emergencies involving the substance.

An SDS is intended to protect workers, emergency responders, and the environment by clearly identifying potential risks and providing specific instructions on how to mitigate them.

The 16 Mandatory Sections of an SDS

Under the GHS standard, every SDS must contain the following 16 sections in exactly this order:

  1. Product & Company Identification – Identifies the chemical, its recommended uses, and provides the manufacturer’s contact and emergency phone numbers.
  2. Hazard(s) Identification – Highlights the hazards associated with the chemical, including warning signs, GHS pictograms, and specific risk ratings (e.g., “Irritant”).
  3. Composition / Information on Ingredients – Lists the chemical ingredients, their exact concentration percentages, and CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) numbers.
  4. First-Aid Measures – Provides critical treatments for different types of exposure: eye contact, skin contact, inhalation, and ingestion.
  5. Fire-Fighting Measures – Details the correct extinguishing media (e.g., water, foam, CO2), potential toxic gases produced during a fire, and required firefighter gear.
  6. Accidental Release Measures – Outlines emergency procedures for spills, including evacuation protocols, containment methods, and cleanup steps.
  7. Handling and Storage – Lists safe usage rules, required storage temperatures, and incompatible materials to avoid mixing.
  8. Exposure Controls / Personal Protection – Specifies exposure limits, necessary ventilation, and required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves or goggles.
  9. Physical and Chemical Properties – Describes the substance’s physical state (liquid, solid, gas), color, odor, boiling point, flashpoint, and pH level.
  10. Stability and Reactivity – Explains the chemical’s stability under normal conditions, hazardous reactions, and conditions to avoid (like extreme heat).
  11. Toxicological Information – Provides medical and scientific data on health effects of exposure, routes of entry, and carcinogenicity.
  12. Ecological Information (Non-Mandatory for OSHA) – Assesses the environmental impact, toxicity to aquatic life, and persistence in soil or water.
  13. Disposal Considerations (Non-Mandatory for OSHA) – Offers guidelines for safe waste treatment, container disposal, and recycling practices.
  14. Transport Information (Non-Mandatory for OSHA) – Provides shipping classifications, UN numbers, hazard classes, and packing groups for transport.
  15. Regulatory Information (Non-Mandatory for OSHA) – Details specific national and international safety, health, and environmental regulations applicable to the product.
  16. Other Information – Indicates when the SDS was created or last revised, and explains any specific abbreviations or legends used in the document.

everyone on a site—from facility managers to cleaning staff—knows how to handle chemicals safely. By
