Cleaning activities involve regular contact with both chemicals and dirty surfaces. To prevent cross-contamination between surfaces, you should use colour-coded cloths/wipes. These should only be used on the surface for which they are specified. A sample list is below.

Once used, the cloth/wipe should be kept in a bag at a designated place and washed at the end of the operative’s shift.

The following clothing and equipment colours are to be used for each designated area or activity:

  • In toilet bowls and urinals: red.
  • In washroom sink, shower and other areas: Red/Yellow.
  • All other surfaces outside the sanitary area (eg, walls, tables and furniture) in the office area: Blue.
  • In kitchens and food-related surfaces (eg, food vending machines, microwaves, fridges, buffets): Green.
